Some days on the water aren’t about filling a livewell. They’re about making memories. This photo captures one of those days for our family.
My husband, Michael, had recently received a new trolling motor for Father’s Day, and our son, Joe, had just gotten a new boat. We couldn’t wait to get them both on the water, so we packed our gear, loaded up our daughter, Chloe, our Boxador, Chomper, and headed to a family friend’s private lake in south Mississippi for a relaxing afternoon together.
Joe was excited to spend the afternoon fishing from his new boat while Chloe happily rode along beside him, enjoying the adventure just as much as the scenery. Michael and I stayed close by in another boat, enjoying the peaceful afternoon and watching the kids have fun exploring the lake.
Like many family outings, things didn’t go exactly as planned. At one point, the seat I was sitting on suddenly gave way, sending me flat on my back in the boat. Once everyone realized I wasn’t hurt, the laughter started. It’s still one of the funniest moments from the trip, and a story I’m sure our family will keep telling for years.
As the afternoon settled into a quiet Mississippi evening, I looked over and noticed Chomper watching Joe and Chloe from our boat. His attention was fixed on them as they drifted across the calm water. It wasn’t something we asked him to do. It was simply a quiet moment that showed the bond he shares with our children. I reached for my camera because I knew it was a memory worth capturing.
Ironically, we didn’t catch a single fish that day, but somehow it didn’t matter. We watched Joe enjoy his new boat, Michael got to put his Father’s Day gift to good use, Chloe enjoyed the ride, and we spent an afternoon laughing together in one of our favorite places. This photograph reminds me that the best days outdoors aren’t always measured by the number of fish you catch. Sometimes they’re measured by the laughter you share and the memories you make.
